How to Care for Your Baby’s Teeth

As soon as your child has their first tooth, it’s time to start brushing. Use a small, soft toothbrush with a smear of fluoride toothpaste to clean their teeth twice a day.

Once a month, gently lift the lip of your baby’s mouth to check for signs of tooth decay. An early sign is white spots on their gum line, especially on the upper front teeth. If you notice this, discoloured areas, pieces of missing teeth, or puffy, bleeding gums, visit your dental professional.

In New Zealand, children aged 0-17 (until their 18th birthday) are entitled to free basic oral healthcare services. Your child will usually have their first check-up with a dental professional between their first and second birthday. To enrol for this service, call 0800 TALK TEETH (0800 825 583).
