Father’s Day Interview: Tui & Maggie’s Dad, Clint Roberts

We spoke to Clint Roberts and Lucy Slight, dad and mum to Tui and Maggie, about what Father’s Day means to their whānau.

Kia ora Clint, Lucy, Tui and Maggie!
Thank you for taking the time to kōrero with us. First, can you’ll us a bit about who you are what you do, and who is in your whānau?

I’m Lucy, a beauty and lifestyle writer and Clint is the host of ZM’s Bree & Clint drive show. We live in Titirangi, West Auckland with our two daughters Tui, who is 3 and Maggie, who is 1. We also have two cats, Ziggy and Bowie, whose birthday we forget every year but we think they’re about to turn 7. Haha.

How will you be celebrating Father’s Day this year?

Tui will probably scribble all over a card with her whiteboard marker and Maggie will have no idea what’s going on. But Clint can choose his favourite dinner and if it’s nice weather we might go for a park or beach adventure. I’d say we’d go to a cafe for a lovely brunch, but that’s a bit unrealistic with a 3 and 1 year old, isn’t it?

What’s your favourite Father’s Day memory?

I think the first Father’s / Mother’s Day is probably always the most special. I don’t remember what we did, but I bought Clint a classic Father’s Day present of socks, sunscreen and a hat that said ‘Rad Dad’ on the front.

What’s the best piece of advice your father gave you?

Clint: My dad’s best advice would be something along the lines of, whatever you do never take anything too seriously and remember to have fun.

Do you have any Father’s Day traditions?

Nothing beyond opening presents with everyone snuggled up in bed (which lasts all of 2 minutes before a small child screams for breakfast). I think we might need to work on a better tradition.

Clint, do you have a dad joke you can share with us?

Q. What’s the best time to go to the dentist?

A. Tooth hurty.

Three questions for Tui.
  • What is your dad the best at?

“Painting”

  • What do you love about your dad?

“Unicorns”

  • What do you like doing with your dad?

“Building the Old McDonald’s slide” (which is a collectable McDonald’s slot car set that Clint’s parents kept from when he was little.)

Father’s Day Interview: Kiwa & Theo’s Dad, Louis

Louis Davis met his wife Ash when he was 15, they had a viral KFC wedding photo, and travelled the world, before settling down in Wellington.

Now, he’s a dad-of-two (16month old Anikiwa and four-legged fur baby Theo) with over 650,000 followers on Tik Tok where he shares adorable daily videos about family life.

Kia ora Louis,
Thank you for taking the time to kōrero with us. First, can you tell us a bit about yourself, and your whānau?

I’m Louis and I’m married to Ashleigh, and we have two kids together.  A four legged staffy called Theo, and our daughter Kiwa who is 16 months old! Kiwa was a pandemic baby – my wife and I didn’t have plans for kids but when the world locked down, we re-jigged our thinking and the idea of settling down grew in our hearts.

Prior to that we’d always been on the move. We’ve travelled to 30 countries together, but now we’re taking on adventures of a different sort.

When Kiwa was born I started making video content that was inspired by the diaries of first Pakeha settlers. They described in detail how it was chiefly for Māori men to care for their children which really resonated. The traditional role of the Māori father is to be playful and affectionate with your children. So, I’m here telling the story of the playful Māori father, having a laugh at myself and bonding my with daughter.

We make videos of our daily routine, Kiwa loves music, and dancing. She loves good music too, like Shaniya Twain and Beyonce… and House music!

So, how will you be celebrating Father’s Day this year?

Father’s Day for me will be with my whānau, eating kai and we’ll probably go for a big walk and take Theo to the park, and Kiwa’s favourite playground on Cuba Street.

What’s your favourite memory of your father?

My father surprised me and took to the Basketball World Cup in Spain. It was just me and my dad, and it was the coolest month together.

What’s the best piece of advice your father gave you?

Leaders grab the tea towel first.

Doing small things matter – the things you expect the people who follow you to do, you should do to.

Do you plan to create any father’s day traditions?

I reckon that as a family, we should honour the dog for Father’s Day. The dog is the only person that never pisses off anyone. We will use that day to appreciate our first son. He is the perfect angel.

Louis, do you have a dad joke you can share with us?

Two fish were sitting in a tank, and one turns to the other and says how do you drive this thing!

Father’s Day Interview: Bastian’s Dad, Andrew

Kia ora Andrew, Megan and Bastian,

How will you be celebrating Father’s Day this year?

We decided before our first father’s day/mother’s day we wouldn’t make it about presents and rather just do something fun together, which also includes having some sort of special meal together. The last couple have always been focused around an epic brunch at home since Bastian still loooves his daytime naps.

What’s your favourite Father’s Day memory?

My favourite Father’s Day memory would be celebrating my first Father’s Day as a new dad myself. It felt so awesome, not because I was being made a fuss of but because I felt proud to be a dad, and proud to take on the new responsibilities that came with the title.

What is a piece of advice you want to share with Bastian?

Be yourself because it’s good enough. We’ll love and support you no matter who you discover yourself to be. Promise.

Do you have any Father’s Day traditions?

Back when I was living at home, my brother, sister and I would always get up early and make my dad and the whole family breakfast. I don’t know if it was tradition or just because we didn’t really know how to cook anything else, but we’d always make French toast with an orange sauce and bacon. Now that we’re older, we’ve definitely made him other breakfasts, but it might be nice to bring out the old orange French toast again this year.

Andrew, do you have a dad joke you can share with us?

Do I?! I don’t have one on me right now, but its all about just being in the moment. Anything can be turned into a dad joke, you just have to be ready with a good pun. My wife doesn’t like them though, she says they’re a “pun-ish”.

Three questions for Bastian.
  • What is your dad the best at?

“Everything”

  • What do you love about your dad?

“Everything”

  • What do you like doing with your dad?

“Everything”
