Our Favourite Toys And Tips To Help Your Teething Pēpi

Your pēpi will start to get their first teeth at around 6 months of age. During this time, you may notice signs of teething. These include sore gums, crying more than usual, red cheeks and lots of dribble!

There are plenty of ways you can support your pēpi with teething, including giving them a teething toy, gently rubbing their gums with a clean finger or wrapping ice cubes in a wash cloth to place on baby’s cheek. You can also try teething gel, teething powder or a teething balm on their cheeks.

We know having a few options on hand makes life easier, so we are sharing some of our favourite teething toys and a super simple rusk recipe.

Bunny Ear Teether $18.90

Bunny Ear Teethers are great! They’re perfect for little hands to grip, easy to clean and come in lots of super cute designs. We love the Over the Dandelions range which are not only gorgeous, but also made from GOTS certified organic muslin and beechwood which is naturally antibacterial, hard wearing and completely safe for babies.

Fanfan la Fawn $39.99

Meet Fanfan la fawn – Sophie the Giraffe’s cousin! Fanfan la fawn is made from 100% natural rubber from the Havea tree and painted with natural food grade paints. Flexible with several chewable parts (ears, legs, etc.), it is perfectly suited to help soothe baby’s gums when getting first teeth. While we absolutely love original Sophie the Giraffe, we’re recommending Fanfan, because the rest of your coffee group will likely have Sophie, and this way you’ll know which cute animal teether is yours.

Silicone Teethers $6.00

Silicone Teethers are a fantastic option – they’re hypoallergenic and non-porous making them super safe for teething pēpi. They’re also easy to clean and can be kept in the freezer ready to aid sore and swollen gums. While there are plenty of different silicone teethers available we really like these ones from Kmart. They’re BPA free, easy for pēpi to hold and oh so cute! At just $6.00 they’re also a great buy.

Teether-Rattle $19.99

We love this Teether Rattle from Liv N Colour! Made from a mix of wooden and silicone elements baby can chew and gnaw to their hearts desire. Made from 100% food-grade silicone and natural wood you can be assured that it’s safe for you pēpi. Our pēpi loved chewing on the silicone beads and shaking it to hear the wood rattle.

Car Key Teether $14.99

Baby car key toys have been a staple for years now. You can find all different shapes and styles, including ones that make sounds. Our favourite for teething, is this Infantino Cool and Chew teether that you can pop in the fridge or freezer. The keys have a variety of textures for baby to chew on, and your pepi will love sliding and shaking colourful keys and beads.

Frozen Breast Milk in a Fresh Food Feeder $25.90

While this isn’t a traditional teething toy, we found it did the trick when baby was teething and grizzly. Next time you pump, try freezing your breastmilk in an ice cube tray, and then giving it to baby in a fresh food feeder, like this one from Haakaa. If your pēpi is eating solids you can also try freezing fruit and popping it in the feeder which will have the same cooling effect.

Homemade Rusks

This homemade rusk recipe (if you can call it that), from My Kids Lick The Bowl has been a firm favourite with our pēpi. It’s EASY, fast, and cheap to make and “turns a humble slice of soft bread into a rock-hard rusk that a teething baby will love to gnaw on.” It’s also perfect if your pēpi is allergic to dairy, as most supermarket rusks contain milk.

While teething can be painful for your pēpi, it won’t make them sick. If your baby has a high fever, diarrhoea, or vomiting, they may be unwell and, in this instance, you should see your GP for an appointment. If you can’t get to the doctor and you’re worried about your baby’s health, call Healthline for free on 0800 611 116 for advice, 24/7.
